A Night with the Islanders - 2017

Written By: Lankan Islanders Cricket Club Committee

On Saturday 22nd July, the Lankan Islanders Cricket Club held their annual flagship event “A Night with the Islanders” dinner dance.

Over 220 people attended this event at the Roslea Community Centre which was the club’s 9th dinner dance. The night was a chance for the club to showcase their year’s success and also raise money for two The Jake Doran Foundation & Trail SL.

The night started with the President of the club Tevin Liyanage addressing the guests and outlining the many achievements the club has accomplished which included the LICC Blue team winning the Calypso Cup for the 3rd year in a row.

The crowd was entertained throughout the evening by popular Sri Lankan band from Melbourne – Cloud 9 who played a mixture of 80s, 90s and current music and not to mention the all-important baila session. The dance floor remained full all night as the crowd enjoyed the entertainment and uniqueness of their music. There also was a baila competition which brought out the best dance moves of the night.

The guests were also treated to a sumptuous buffet dinner between dancing sessions which was catered by Caterplan, with head chef Mahinda Mendis providing a great selection of food. Entrees included some great short eats which lead to the buffet dinner including many of Chef Mahinda’s signature dishes. Soft drinks and a bottle of red wine were served on the table. The food was enjoyed by all, with many guests returning to the buffet.

Some great raffle prizes and door prizes were given out to add to the spectacle of the event including 7 nights stay at a 5 star hotel in Fiji and a signed bat by former Australia captain Mark Taylor. A silent auction was held and the prize was a signed Sri Lankan Test Cricket hat by Rangana Herath.

The feedback was very positive from all the attendees and the most encouraging comment was that this dinner dance was once again organized by Sri Lankan youth. The event was full of flavour, fun and in the Lankan Islanders spirit.

The club is now looking forward to the next season starting in a few months time.

On behalf of the committee we would like to thank all the players, family and friends for their continued support and making the night a great success.
